Studio Tour

We finally created a small studio area for me to create my glass pieces. I’d been working in a small corner of my house, but a lack of adequate ventilation and space prompted our move to the basement. We live in a fairly old house with a nice creepy basement.

On one of our free weekends, we made the trek downstairs to clean it out. Several days and dust later, we added a nice workstation with good ventilation and new wiring. My father and husband built a torching station.

I have my glass sorted and stored

and my kilns behind me for easy access.

Some of our work area is still in the main part of the house, but we hope to get it all moved downstairs soon.

Here I am working on a bead.

These pictures show a floral bead in various stages. First, I pull any stringers that I may want to use in decorating my bead.

Then, I make a small barrel bead using transparent green glass.

After I have the bead the way I want it, I add “vines” using my frit stringer.

I want my bead to have some depth while remaining smooth, so I encase the bead with clear glass.

Now that my bead is smooth again, I can add my final touch, the flowers.

I melt the white dots flat then add a different color to make the petals.

I like some of my petals to be round while others are pointed so I drag some of the molten glass out to a point.

Almost done! You can’t have flowers without centers, so I use a different stringer to plunge a center right in between my petals.

All that is left now is to reheat the bead and do any final shaping.

The bead needs to be annealed, so in the kiln it goes!

And here’s the finished product.
